A couple of months ago Black Diamond asked me to review there new Spot head torch RAM mountaneering kindly provided me with a unit to test and this is what I've found: The Black Diamond Spot is a fantastic upper level head torch its spot/peripheral lighting is great in that it allows you to easily switch between a focused beam for long range illumination (ideal for running or biking when you want to see whats coming your way before it gets to you) or the closer range slightly more dim mode using three led's for around the campsite or in the house when escom shuts you down. Initially I found the mode switching quite confusing and would end up with the spot flashing away when all as I wanted was a slightly dimmer light setting or I would be throwing out a dazzling spot light when I actually wanted the LED option. However a couple of trys and I was quitehappy and could easily change mode with it mounted to my nut. The strap is easily adjustable and comfortable securing the head torch no matter what your up to in the dark. As a pilot and kayaker I would have liked the torch to come with a red filter option to preserve your night vision when flying and a higher waterproofing rating so one would not have to worry when doing over night river trips. All in all I found this a very usefull, powerfull, comfortable head torch and at R549.00 (From RAM mountaneering) very competativly priced.
