Age: 30 (since yesterday)
Been climbing since: the mid-1990s, when Guy Holwil, Dave Pothier, Justin Hawkins, Steve Bradshaw, Snr (who had no idea that would become his title!) and the Jeremies (Samson and Colenso) were the rock gods and lycra was not just in, it was mandatory!

A while back I entered a competition here for the best night time shots. For my troubles i got a black diamond cosmo(I think) headlamp. This guy has now done a full circle. I'll explain how.
I recently took a very lazy week off, we were in the Tankwa Karoo national park for a few days and then wound our way towards Sanddrif in the Cederberg. The rule was that we were never going to drive more than 3 hours at a time. Forced chill out as you will. In the Tankwa, we were at a…

Saturday 14 April was the day of the Montagu Rock Rally. Although the weather looked dubious we climbed all day in perfect conditions. I spent the day climbing with Julia Wakeling and together we ran around Montagu in a flurry of energy, turning some heads as we went. This is because we were the Chickaboos - the superhero chicks - naturally wearing our underwear on the outside.
As it turned out I hadn't climbed so much in ages. We started off warming up at Lion's Said. We then went…

Sunday the 15th of April, myself my girlfriend and three friends headed out to Umgeni valley for a morning of leisurely climbing. None of us are very good climbers but enjoy being out there with a group of friends as well as the personal challenge of climbing. We headed down into the valley via the normal route and decided to climb one or two of the "new" routes that have recently been opened up. We lead the first route (name escapes me but its the third or so of the "new" routes) a bit of a…

I’d seen that photo on ClimbZA of Dark Horse looking stylish and bad-ass on Arms Race (pic below, taken by Jeremy Samson).

A while later, Clinton suggested I go try and on-sight it. Cobus was keen for his “weekly dose of fear on TM”, so a little while ago off we went. I knew nothing of the route, other than what was in the route guide and the fact that it was called “Arms Race”. I suspected that there was going to be a massive trade-off between placing gear while…

A number of years ago, just about the time I was starting to really expand my horizons in climbing, I went up to the ledge wih Kirten (Kirsti) Meyer and Alex Eppel - two of my favourite climbing partners at the time and my very close friends today. We were there because Kirsti wanted to try Africa Arete. It seemed like the most striking line on Table Mountain and Kirsti was climbing like a demon - it just made sense for her to give it ago. The only catch was that Kirsti hadn't had that much…

What has 800 double-size steps, ascends 760 metres from bottom to top and is ‘only’ 2.1km in length? It’s Platteklip Gorge, the most popular route used by locals and visitors to climb to the top of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. And, on one day every year, Platteklip’s rocky steps challenge the…
