Chicks on the Nose

I stretched up and just got a tiny offset nut into the only pin-scar I could reach.  I tugged on it from my precarious perch balancing high in my etriers.  Will it stay in?  Oh crap.  Well only one way to find out.  I clipped my other etrier to the tiny nut and delicately stepped into it.  If it comes out I’m going flying. …See More

The Nose in a Day

By Hector Pringle  Sometimes climbing gets you into some strange situations and you're not quite sure how you landed there. Case in point: Its 11pm. I’m halfway up a 20m chimney and haven’t yet placed a single piece of my triple rack. I’m staring at a bolt that I know I can’t clip - I’ll need to flick the rope out of the…See More

Third Pillar of Dana

There are better things to find out at 5:30pm than that you are missing your brand new cam.  It is not good at all if this cam is just below the top of the second pitch of the route you have just completed.  Especially, if you will need an hour to hike out, back to the car and are at an altitude of 10000ft.Gosia and I (Andrew) had just completed our first climb together in the High Sierras, having done a fine route on the Third Pillar of Dana.  This is a rather spectacular peak that lies on the…See More

Introducing our Adventure!

Yosemite – home of sweeping granite cliffs and the Captain (El Capitan). The first time you drive underneath the Captain it’s inevitable for a string of superlatives to ensue. It’s also impossible to describe or photographically capture this mountain – it’s just so much bigger in real life. So I won’t try, but I’ll introduce you to our little adventure. A while back a bunch of us decided to journey out to Yosemite to try our hands at the famed granite. Travelling on slightly different…See More

Getting a not so free ride up El Cap

Free rider is the least difficult free route up El Cap.  It follows the Salathe Wall route, with a few variations, mostly on the ajoining Excaliber.  In this story, Clinton becomes the first South African to free El Cap, and Anthony and I get to do some valuable hauling and belaying.  We also get to do some fun climbing in an awesome location.

The logistics of doing hard climbing high up on a route deserve a topic of their own.  2 basic approaches are used by teams.  Most hike up, and…

The story of Half Dome

(A personal account by Andrew Porter)

Half Dome is one of the most prominent and impressive landmarks within Yosemite.  It towers above the valley floor and can be seen from almost anywhere within the valley, and also from Tuolumne and the High Sierras.  The smooth, vertical north face is especially appealing to rock climbers.
