Arms Race (23, 21, 22)

I’d seen that photo on ClimbZA of Dark Horse looking stylish and bad-ass on Arms Race (pic below, taken by Jeremy Samson). A while later, Clinton suggested I go try and on-sight it.  Cobus was keen for his “weekly dose of fear on TM”, so a little while ago off we went.  I knew nothing of the route, other than what was in the route guide and the fact that it was called “Arms Race”.  I suspected that there was going to be a massive trade-off between placing gear while getting super pumped and…See More

Yosemite: The first 3 days

Arrived SUPER excited and fell asleep, totally blown from only 6hrs sleep during the 57hrs of travelling.  Urgh.  How long does it take to get to the Cederberg again?  Clinton and I did get an afternoon climb in...Serenity Crack, a relatively easy classic.  Hot, but really beautiful, and awesome to get moving again after the flights, busses, trains etc!  Got back to camp to find Gosia, Hector, Rushad and Andrew...let the festivities begin!  They're already well warmed up (had just done the…See More

Mischief, pure mischief

The first time I went to Oorlogskloof (near Montagu) was about four years ago to belay Clinton on The Dream I Knew.  It turned into a marathon belay session and after several hours I was cold, hungry and desperately needed to pee.  I was grumpy and never even glanced at Mischief and Thuggery.  …See More

Redhill / Coppermine Access Update

Niel Mostert and I had a meeting with SANParks Table Mountain National Park section rangers yesterday. Basically, bouldering is not allowed on SANParks land on the peninsula. After a recent biodiversity assessment, the managers are keen to minimise impact in this area. According to the rules, people are only allowed to walk on paths. The managers are unhappy with the new paths that have been made by boulderers. They have tried to close and rehabilitate these paths, but are getting more and more…See More
