Wandering Among Starts

“What can ail thee, knight at Arms?  Alone and palely loitering  The sedge has withered from the lake  And no birds sing.”  I admit that the above stanza has little to do with what I'm about to write, but its from a poem by Keats called “La Belle Dame sans Merci”. If you're into that kind of thing, go read it – its rather touching, if a little melancholy. Anyway, two weeks ago I did a bit of loitering of my own, clad in the steel of wizened trad gear and staring up at the awe-inspiring Wolfberg…See More

Simple Things

I live in Hout Bay, very close to the Camps Bay side of Table Mountain. I've always wondered whether there would be some decent climbing among the patches of chossy, rotten rock that tends to be found there. Yesterday I finally got around to actually finding out. Me and two of my brothers, Boo and Joey (nicknames, in case you were getting worried), got some food, gear and water together and headed out. It's a fairly long walk to get around Hout Bay Corner (our chosen route up), since we were…See More

The Forest

Recently I've been spending a lot of time exploring the boulders inside Cecilia Forest. Specifically, I've been climbing at The Den, a large boulder hidden below the path that I found completely by accident two years ago. I was walking with my family from Constantia Nek to Kirstenbosch when I noticed a small grey rock sticking out of the ground about fifty meters below the path. When I went to investigate, I found that the small grey rock I'd seen was only the tip of a large, featured…See More

Fooling Around at Peers Cave

Me, my brother Max and Andy headed out to Peer's Cave today, despite the recent rains and general nasty weather. When we got there we discovered that all the routes we had planned to do were soaking wet, so Andy had a great idea – why don't we go trad something? We'd both watched The Sharp End last night, so we were pretty psyched for it! One thing led to another, and soon enough I found a short, but very steep roof crack at the Sin Bin sector of Peer's Cave. I figured it was worth a shot, so I…See More

New Projects

The last week I've spent checking out new potential for projects – both possible new routes and established sport routes. First up is Mono, a very cool roof route at the Mine. After doing A Gift of Wings recently, Mono seems to be the logical next step to send. It follows the Gift up its first easy section, and then at the roof splits right into a sustained, tricky variation. On the first go of the day, I managed all the moves. There were only really two hard moves – the crux for me was moving…See More

All Weathered Out..

I am officially up to my neck in Cape Town weather. I haven't climbed outdoors in just under a week, which is pretty much my limit before withdrawal sets in. Hopefully some sort of miracle will occur tomorrow and the hurricane winds are going to stop. Until then, however, I'm stuck climbing indoors which, while fun, isn't quite the same thing. On a more happy note though I finally have a hangboard set up at home! A few weeks ago Andy Davies very kindly gave it to me after a day trip to Montagu.…See More

A New Life on the Edge?

As of yesterday, I'm officially part of the RAM team! It's really awesome for me, having support for climbing. Plus, though I've only met a few of them (Simon, Tatum and Warren), the people at RAM seem very cool. After the whole meeting yesterday, I decided to head out to Topside to try out my new pair of shoes, the Saltic Avaxes. After about an hour of messing about on the Silvermine boulder, I think I decided the difference between a pair of new shoes and a pair of knackered, holey ones is…See More
